Timber Basics: Application, Durability & Use Online Training Course

Event Type: Seminar
Date: Tuesday 9 November 2021
Location: Webinar via Zoom platform

Event Description

All building professionals – architects, building designers, engineers, builders and certifiers – should have an understanding of the properties of wood as a resource and how these impacts its use as a building material. Timber Queensland has developed a new online course to provide a deeper understanding of timber application, specification and durability considerations.

Event Program

Registration is now closed. Please contact Sarah Porter Dix via emali at sarah@timberqueensland.com.au for enquiries.

This online course has been developed to give a basic understanding of timber application, specification and durability considerations for designers, specifiers and end-users of timber. Participants will gain an understanding of the properties of wood as a resource and how this impacts its use as a building material.

This year we have added a new training module on Certification and Chain of Custody, facilitated by course sponsor Responsible Wood, which will give a deeper understanding of sustainable forest management and give participants an understanding of timber's entire value chain from source to end product.

This online training course will take place over 4 sessions via the Zoom webinar platform:

  • Tuesday 9 November 11.00 am – 12.00 pm
  • Tuesday 16 November 11.00 am – 12.00 pm
  • Tuesday 23 November 11.00 am – 12.30 pm
  • Tuesday 30 November 11.00 am – 11.30 am

A maximum of 60 participants will be taken per course to ensure an interactive group learning environment.

Timber Queensland members who wish to register for this online training course for free can email Sarah Porter Dix at sarah@timberqueensland.com.au who will personally book you in. These spaces are strictly limited.  AQTMN licensees looking to book staff in for this training should also do so via email.

After registering, Timber Queensland will send through a confirmation email with webinar details and links.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

  • Understand tree growth and the properties of wood structure which affect its processing and end-use.
  • Learn to specify timber and wood products, including the basics of timber grading (structural stress grading and non-structural grades).
  • Study specification considerations like moisture content, movement and shrinkage, and species selection.
  • Evaluate how to maximise timber’s performance in any given application.
  • Gain an understanding of hazard levels and factors which may limit timber’s durability performance.
  • Hear about preservative treatments and how to specify these systems.
  • Explore timber product certification; including Chain of Custody, responsible sourcing, traceability and controlled sources. NEW
