Timber Basics: Application, Durability & Use Online Training Course
Tuesday 9 November 2021
Webinar via Zoom platform
All building professionals – architects, building designers, engineers, builders and certifiers – should have an understanding of the properties of wood as a resource and how these impacts its use as a building material. Timber Queensland has developed a new online course to provide a deeper understanding of timber application, specification and durability considerations.
Registration is now closed. Please contact Sarah Porter Dix via emali at email@example.com for enquiries.
This online course has been developed to give a basic understanding of timber application, specification and durability considerations for designers, specifiers and end-users of timber. Participants will gain an understanding of the properties of wood as a resource and how this impacts its use as a building material.
This year we have added a new training module on Certification and Chain of Custody, facilitated by course sponsor Responsible Wood, which will give a deeper understanding of sustainable forest management and give participants an understanding of timber's entire value chain from source to end product.
This online training course will take place over 4 sessions via the Zoom webinar platform:
Tuesday 9 November 11.00 am – 12.00 pm
Tuesday 16 November 11.00 am – 12.00 pm
Tuesday 23 November 11.00 am – 12.30 pm
Tuesday 30 November 11.00 am – 11.30 am
A maximum of 60 participants will be taken per course to ensure an interactive group learning environment.
Timber Queensland members who wish to register for this online training course for free can email Sarah Porter Dix at firstname.lastname@example.org who will personally book you in. These spaces are strictly limited. AQTMN licensees looking to book staff in for this training should also do so via email.
After registering, Timber Queensland will send through a confirmation email with webinar details and links.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
Understand tree growth and the properties of wood structure which affect its processing and end-use.
Learn to specify timber and wood products, including the basics of timber grading (structural stress grading and non-structural grades).
Study specification considerations like moisture content, movement and shrinkage, and species selection.
Evaluate how to maximise timber’s performance in any given application.
Gain an understanding of hazard levels and factors which may limit timber’s durability performance.
Hear about preservative treatments and how to specify these systems.
Explore timber product certification; including Chain of Custody, responsible sourcing, traceability and controlled sources. NEW
Session 1 - Introduction & Wood Basics: Terminology & Properties
Tuesday 9 November 11.00 am - 12.00 pm
Presenter: Colin MacKenzie
Learning Objectives: Participants will be given a short introductory overview of timber as a resource, including tree growth and wood structure. This session will provide an understanding of wood and the properties which affect processing and end-use. Participants will gain an understanding of the essential properties of wood and commercial timber product types.
Session 2 - Timber Application & Specification
Tuesday 16 November 11.00 am - 12.00 pm
Presenter: Lex Somerville
Learning Objectives: This session will cover timber grading (structural stress grading and non-structural grades), moisture content, movement and shrinkage, and other specification considerations such as species selection. Participants will learn to specify timber and wood products.
Session 3 - Durability & Treatment Systems
Tuesday 23 November 11.00 am - 12.30 pm
Presenter: Colin MacKenzie
Learning Objectives: This session will provide an overview of maximising timber’s performance in any given application. Participants will gain an understanding of hazard levels and factors which may limit timber’s durability performance, as well as learning about different preservative treatments and how to specify these systems to guarantee prolonged building service life.
Session 4 - Certification & Chain of Custody NEW MODULE
Tuesday 30 November 11.00 am - 12.30 pm
Presenter: Simon Dorries
Learning Objectives: This session will provide an overview the certification process, by which wood products can and should be traceable from the sustainably managed forests from which they are harvested, through the market. The session will explore the concepts of Chain of Custody, responsible sourcing, traceability, controlled sources and more.
